Frequently asked questions about Cornerstone - Questions & Answers

What kind of church is this?

Cornerstone is a contemporary interdenominational Christian congregation.

First and foremost, we are distinctly Christian, adhering to the Biblical, historic Christian faith. Our statement of faith is in agreement with the great confessions of the faith proclaimed throughout the history of Christianity.

We are also a contemporary church. We seek to communicate and apply the unchanging message of the Gospel in a way that people like us--in our time and place--can understand and appreciate. We are not novel for novelty's sake, but we do seek to express our faith in a way that is true to its meaning and fits who we are.

Interdenominational means that we appreciate the value and manifest the diversity of the Christian community, but are not aligned with any particular denominational organization. We do recognize that our congregation is a part of the larger Christian community and will associate and collaborate with others when it makes sense for accomplishing our common mission.

  Who's the pastor?

Brian Foreman is Cornerstone's founding and senior pastor. Brian prepared for ministry at Palm Beach Atlantic University in West Palm Beach, Florida. After graduating, he served in volunteer church leadership positions while in an interim career as an information systems administrator. Brian then served as an associate pastor at a non-traditional, fast-growing new church in Boynton Beach.

In 1999, Brian and his family relocated to New Hampshire, where his wife Suellen has family, with the purpose of starting a new church congregation. After serving at another recently established church in Bedford, New Hampshire, Brian led the team that launched Cornerstone Community Church in early 2003.

Brian has a giftedness for creatively communicating the Bible so that people can understand and benefit from its positive, life-altering message. "I really believe it's a sin to bore people with the Bible," says Brian. "It's the most important and powerful message in the world, so we do everything we can to make the Bible come alive, and then get lived out."

Brian's passion is to see a biblically functioning community. "The church is primarily a family," says Brian. "All of us want a place to belong; a place where we're loved, accepted, and encouraged to become all God intends for us to be."

What does Cornerstone offer for children and teens?

For children from birth - 5th grade our Kids' Zone Children's Ministry meets at the same time as our Sunday Worship Celebration Service. In the Kids' Zone kids learn the truths of God's Word in a fun and secure environment. Each week they experience Bible lessons that are age-appropriate, interactive and relevant to their lives.

Older students are integrated into the life of the church. They serve. They participate in Connection Groups for youth on various topics each semester. They are eligible for Participating Membership.

When are you planning to build a church?

Our focus is first and foremost to build up people. In that sense, the church is already under construction--because the people of the congregation are really the church!

We are currently meeting in a rented facility. This allows us to maximize our resources at the church's inception. However, in time we plan to have a building that will serve the needs of a growing church community and provide a physical presence in our community.

How can I become a member of the church?

At Cornerstone we welcome you wherever you are on your spiritual journey and will encourage you along one step at a time. Participating Membership at Cornerstone can be a significant next step in your spiritual journey. Participating Membership isn't just putting your name on a list. Membership recognizes your participation in the life of the church. For more about membership, click here.

We believe - Mission & Beliefs

God
God is the creator and ruler of the universe. He eternally exists in three equally divine Persons: the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. God is perfectly holy, completely good, infinitely loving, limitless in knowledge and sovereign in power.

Jesus Christ
Jesus Christ is God the Son. He is both fully God and fully man. Jesus lived a sinless life and offered himself as the perfect sacrifice for the sins of all people by dying on the cross. He arose bodily from the dead, demonstrating his victory over sin and death, ascended into heaven and will return again someday to earth to reign as King of Kings and Lord of Lords.

The Holy Spirit
The Holy Spirit is God the Spirit, co-equal with God the Father and God the Son. The Holy Spirit is present in the world to make people aware of their need for Jesus Christ. He lives in every Christian from the moment of salvation. He provides the believer with power for Christian living, understanding of spiritual truth, and guidance for doing what is right. He gives spiritual gifts to believers to empower and enable them to serve others. As Christians, we seek to live under his control daily.

The Bible
The Bible, the Old and New Testament together, is God's Word to us, so we believe that what the Bible teaches is true, is true. It was written by human authors, under the supernatural guidance of the Holy Spirit. As the inspired Word of God, the Bible is without error in the original writings, the complete revelation of his will for salvation, and the ultimate authority by which every realm of human knowledge and endeavor should be judged. Therefore it is to be believed in all that it teaches, obeyed in all that it requires, and trusted in all that it promises.

The Human Condition
People are made in the spiritual image of God, to be like him in character. People are the supreme object of God's creation. God's image has been marred by attitudes and acts of disobedience towards God called sin. As such, apart from God's saving work in Jesus Christ all human beings are sinners by nature and by choice, alienated from God, and deservedly under his judgment. Only through God's saving work in Jesus Christ can we be rescued from sin, reconciled to God and renewed in spirit.

Salvation
Salvation is God's free gift to us but we must accept it. We can never make up for our sin with self-improvement or good works. Only by trusting exclusively in Jesus Christ as God's offer of forgiveness and eternal life can anyone be saved from sin's power and penalty. When we turn from our self-ruled life and turn to Jesus in faith we are saved. Eternal life begins the moment one receives Jesus Christ into his life by faith. One who has been genuinely saved is secure in that salvation for eternity, since it is the grace and power of God that initiates and maintains salvation, not the self-effort of the Christian.

Christian Living
God calls and empowers the Christian to live a life of love, purity and obedience. The grace and forgiveness we receive in salvation is not a license to sin, but part of the salvation process by which we are cleansed from sin. God's Holy Spirit living in us as Christians gives us the desire and ability to live lives that please and honor God. Although we will never reach perfection in this life, the Christian should increasingly experience victory over sin in his life. Together with other believers, we are make disciples from all peoples, and live lives of wholehearted devotion to God and sacrificial love for others.

The Church
The church consists of all who have been saved by God's grace through faith in Jesus Christ. Believers are united by the Holy Spirit in the body of Christ, of which he is the head. Local churches are visible expressions of the body of Christ, whose membership should be composed only of believers. The Lord Jesus mandated two ordinances for the church, baptism and the Lord's Supper, which are not means of salvation, but visibly and tangibly express the gospel.

Response and Eternal Destiny
Everyone lives forever somewhere. We will either exist eternally separated from God by sin in a place called hell, or eternally with God through forgiveness and salvation in a place called heaven. Heaven and hell are real places of eternal existence. God invites everyone everywhere to receive the offer of forgiveness and life in Jesus Christ by responding to the gospel in faith and obedience. In the essential beliefs, we have unity.
In the non-essential beliefs, we have liberty.
In all our beliefs, we show charity.

January 8 - March 12, 2006 Who is Jesus?

Sure you know his name, you know (generally) who he is, but have you ever really investigated Jesus' identity and claims? Who is he beyond a baby in a manger at Christmas and a man on a cross on Easter?

In this spirit of this kind of careful observation and faithful application, Cornerstone is presenting this CSI series that examines the evidence related to a life and death (and life) that changed history: Jesus Christ.

In each "episode" of Cornerstone's CSI, we'll pull together the evidence for and from the Biblical account from The Gospel According to Mark, the second book in the New Testament. As we work through the Biblical text, expect to be enlightened, challenged and inspired as we come face to face with not a victim but a hero whose luster and impact increase with each observation!

Kids' Zone Vision & Values - PARENTS GUIDE

The Kids' Zone's Vision & Values are the guiding principles that shape the ministry. As statements of vision, they describe the kind of children's ministry we want to be. As our core values, these statements serve as guidelines for decision-making and the practice of our ministry, as well as a standard of excellence that helps us evaluate our ministry efforts.

Child-targeted Perhaps it should go without saying, but we must be clear that this is a ministry to children! Every moment and activity should be are age-appropriate and engaging to children. Biblical truth needs to be taught in ways that will be best understood and applied by children. From the moment a kid enters the Kids' Zone, everything about the place from the décor to the choice and scheduling of the volunteers should scream "This is an awesome place for kids!"

Relevant Every lesson, example, and activity must be applicable to a kids' life now. Biblical literacy is important: we want them to know the Bible. But familiarity alone is never enough. We want each child to know how to apply Biblical principles to their life. We give information, but we encourage transformation.

Engaging Biblical Teaching If it's a sin to bore people with the Bible, perhaps nowhere is that sin more grievous than in a children's ministry! Our teaching is Biblically-based and creatively presented. The message of the Bible is timeless and powerful, but unless the presentation engages the children it will never impact their life. Otherwise it's like having a powerful engine revving, but never getting it out of park: you'll never get anywhere! Similarly, presenting the truths of the Bible in creative, relevant, engaging ways that connect with a kid's life unleashes the power of God's Word in their lives.

Intentionally Relational In the Kids' Zone, we intentionally foster relationships with and among the kids. An important component of the teaching that occurs in the Kids' Zone happens as they watch their leaders' lives and see their peers learning to follow Christ. We provide opportunities for the kids to build mutually encouraging relationships among their peers. Each volunteer should think of their service in terms of building relationships rather than just fulfilling a task.

Safe The Kids' Zone must be a safe place for kids: emotionally, spiritually and physically. Our tone is positive, welcoming and encouraging. We accept kids wherever they are on their spiritual journey, and encourage them along one step at a time without shame or coercion. We screen volunteers. We don't allow children alone with just one adult. Our rooms and equipment are safe and age-appropriate. We don't undermine the authority of and respect for the parents. Kids and parents should know without concern that the children are safe in the Kids' Zone.

Fun Let's be honest: fun is key to accomplishing our mission with kids. Fun makes kids want to come back week after week. Fun is what engages a kid. Fun is the word a kid would use for a church ministry that's child-targeted, relevant to their lives, teaches the Bible in an engaging way, where they and their friends are led by adults who care about them, in a safe environment. So we make it fun for them ... and us!

In the Kids' Zone, children learn the truths of God's Word in a fun and secure environment.

Nursery children (infants through toddlers) may be taken directly to the nursery upon arrival on Sunday morning.

Kids preschool age through 5th grade get their nametags when then arrive and participate with their families in the first part of the Worship Celebration Service. During the greeting time in the service, the kids are released to go with their Kids' Zone leaders to the Kids' Zone.

Children are ready to be picked up by parents or guardians from the Nursery and Kids' Zone at the conclusion of the service.

Now Brian has transitioned from his role as BCC's Associate Pastor to Cornerstone's founding pastor. Several families from BCC helped to form the core of the new church and pre-launch worship services began in March 2003, with the church's official start on Easter in April 2003.

In March 2008, the church began meeting in the new Red River Theatres on South Main Street in Concord, and continues to expand as more and more people find Brian's preaching--and Cornerstone's whole approach to doing church--"relevant, real and refreshing."

A Move with a Mission... - Our Pastor

Pastor Brian Foreman and his family moved to New Hampshire in July 1999 with the purpose of planting a new church. Brian had been an associate pastor at a contemporary, non-traditional church in Boynton Beach, Florida. For some time, however, God had been planting the desire in his heart to start a new church. Brian resigned his position and within days he and his wife Suellen became convinced that God's plan was for them to move to New Hampshire to do just that!

Why New Hampshire? "Suellen has family in Manchester and had spent a few of her growing up years in New Hampshire, so she was familiar with the state," says Brian. "That's what got us thinking about a new church in New Hampshire. We did some research, we did some praying, and we became convinced that that was where God wanted us to go."

Within months they had sold their house and loaded everything they didn't sell at yard sales in a truck and headed north. "We set out to plant a new church with no money, no backing and no contacts, so when we arrived it was not with a triumphant 'We're here!' but more with a questioning 'Now what?' But we were convinced that God had led us here and that he would make a way."

And make a way He did! Shortly after arriving in New Hampshire, the Foremans visited Bedford Community Church. BCC had a commitment to nurturing a church-planting environment and was looking for an associate pastor. In January 2000, Brian became BCC's Associate Pastor, with plans to branch out to plant a new church with BCC's support and blessing.

Helping parents transfer a spiritual legacy to their children

The FamilyTimes Virtue Pack helps you by providing tools each month to teach Biblical values to your children. These are the same virtues we are focusing on in the Kids' Zone that month.

The FamilyTimes tools involve no preparation nor do they have to be pulled off a book shelf. As you go through the virtue pack you will notice that it introduces you to all the pieces and explains the concepts in more detail.

The tools are used during the four significant family times, and should be placed in the location that corresponds with the time they are to be used. MealTime (A multi-paneled card containing cool ideas and conversation starters for weekly family discussions at the dinner table)
DriveTime (CD to listen to in the car which includes the KidJam program, Parenting Matters, and the virtue song for the month)
BedTime (Four Bible story cards for bedtime)
MorningTime (Four encouragement cards parents write to their child)

The plan is based on the Biblical method of teaching children, helping the parent maximize their time and fulfill their intended roles as counselor, teacher, friend and coach.

FamilyTimes is based on a three year plan in sync with Sunday mornings at Cornerstone.

How to get FamilyTimes Virtue Packs

The FamilyTimes Virtue Pack is a monthly subscription which can be started or canceled at any time. (See the subscription/delivery schedule on the reverse.) Subscribe directly at www.FamilyTimes.org: $11.50 per month ($8 plus $3.50 shipping) billed to your credit card, mailed to your address.Subscribe through Cornerstone Community Church: $8 per month (or less because of volume discounts and combined shipping) automatically debited from your checking account, picked up at church on Sunday.
